Last Tuesday’s concert by Train at the Toledo Zoo Amphitheater was nothing short of enchanting. Nestled within grounds of the zoo, the venue is a stunning blend of natural beauty and thoughtful design. The open-air seating framed by foliage, soft evening breezes, and intimate ambient lighting that made the stage feel both grand and cozy.
Opening for Train, Edwin McCain delivered a soulful set that perfectly warmed up the crowd. His rich vocals and heartfelt stage presence instantly connected with the audience. Known for his ballads, McCain blended sincerity and humor in his between-song banter, instantly making the audience feel like old friends. A highlight was his 1997 hit “I’ll be” which everyone in the crowd sang along to. McCain’s performances had a wonderful balance of ballads and uplifting sing-alongs, setting a welcoming tone and building excitement for the headliner Train.
From the first notes of “Brokenhearted” to the soaring finale of “Drops of Jupiter,” Train’s setlist was packed with both fan favorites and unexpected covers.
Frontman Pat Monahan lit up the Amphitheater with genuine crowd interactions, when he grabbed fan’s cell phones and started snapping selfies with those in the front rows.
A touching moment came when his son joined him on stage during their rendition of Led Zeppelin’s “Over the Hills and Far Away,” adding a personal touch that felt both spontaneous and poignant and earned roaring applause.
During their hit song “Marry Me” a romantic surprise unfolded. The song became the soundtrack to a live marriage proposal. The crowd erupted when she said “YES!”, adding a burst of joy to the already electric atmosphere. Pat congratulated the couple and asked for nothing more than for the newly engaged couple to wear the band’s t-shirts the crew was going to gift them during their wedding ceremony.
