Angel Olsen with Sharon Van Etten and Julien Baker
The Salt Shed
With the beginning of August came the opening of Chicago’s newest venue, The Salt Shed – A repurposing of the former Morton Salt warehouse right along the Chicago River off Goose Island. Construction continues as The Salt Shed plans a full blown opening in 2023, utilizing the now functioning outdoor space and what will soon be an indoor venue for concerts during the winter months. The venue’s soft launch came in the form of an outdoor concert series running from the beginning of August through September.
Included in this series of concerts was The Wild Hearts Tour with Angel Olsen, Sharon Van Etten, and Julien Baker – A cohesive grouping that sure to attract every lesbian in a 30 mile radius. The Chicago date of this tour also featured Alaskan singer songwriter Quinn Christopherson, who received notoriety after winning the Tiny Desk Contest in 2019. Christopherson opened the show preceding Julien Baker, and no time was wasted in playing songs that would make audience members cry. It felt so fitting to look around and see hundreds of fans with tote bags from the tour, which read: “I went to The Wild Hearts Tour and all I got was emotional!”
The show played out underneath a brewing full moon and put another Salt Shed Summer Series concert in the books. This series is still in its early days, so there’s still plenty of time to go see a show at The Salt Shed before it closes up for the season!
