King Diamond with Overkill and Night Demon
The Louisville Palace
Louisville, KY
October 23rd, 2024
Danish metal artist King Diamond brought his Saint Lucifer’s Hospital 1920 Tour to The Louisville Palace on October 23rd, bringing special guest MYRKVR (Danish artist Amalie Bruun) on guest vocals. Having started this musical project in 1974, he is known for his powerful and wide ranging vocal range, as well as his dark lyrical content and story concepts. The crowd was full of heavy metal fans this evening, several of whom were in the VIP section in front of the stage, in costume and King Diamond-esque face paint, who were ready to rock out! This was King Diamond’s first performance in Louisville since 2019 and was the perfect mix of heavy metal concert and theatrical performance! The stage set up was impressive, with a spooky-looking 1920’s hospital-like stage production full of props and a woman who performed many roles this evening as part of the production. There were staircases going up both sides of the stage to a wide platform that stretched along the top, back of the stage to connect them. MYRKVR was on a small platform on the top of the left staircase, with the drummer being on a platform beneath the top one but above the stage. The stage had a cell door with the number 9, a wheelchair with a tall back, a coffin with Abigail written on it, and plenty of spooky lighting and fog. It fully represented a hospital straight out of a nightmare! Starting off the evening removing the doll Abigail from her coffin, the evening began! Starting the set off with “Arrival”, King Diamond’s set list spanned the entirety of his long career and involved a detailed horror story that saw the King, aside from his signature cape and evil black and white make up, also wear a mask that was akin to The Phantom of The Opera, as well as a mask with long long grey hair that had him looking like a creepy old man! He played several roles throughout the story this evening! It was the perfect show to see so close to Halloween, with the fans really engaged and singing along and clearly mesmerized by the production this evening! Starting off the evening were Ventura, CA heavy metal band Night Demon, who got the crowd revved up for the evening, followed by thrash metal icons Overkill. It was a perfect night of metal!
