Dogstar Brings a Spirited Welcome Back to Detroit at Saint Andrew’s Hall
By the time the doors opened at Saint Andrew’s Hall on Saturday, Aug. 22, the dedication of the Dogstar faithful was already on full display. Fans had been queuing since noon, eager to claim their spot in there front row for the Detroit stop of the band’s All In Now Tour. By showtime, the anticipation inside the historic venue was palpable.
The evening began with The Backfires, who hit the stage at 8 p.m.
The band thanked fans for showing up early and seemed genuinely thrilled to be along for the ride. They’ve been having a blast on this tour, and with their second album, Stardust, released just a couple of weeks earlier on Aug. 7, they had plenty of new material to celebrate. Their seven-song set included “Stardust,” “Super 8,” “Replace It All,” “What If?,” “Grow,” “Heaven’s Sold Out” and “I Want You.”
Then, at 9 p.m., it was time for Dogstar.
Frontman Bret Domrose welcomed the Detroit crowd and noted how happy the band was to see some new faces. After the group’s break to record their latest release “All In Now”, he said, it had been a fun welcome back.
Dogstar opened with “Siren,” immediately setting the tone for a set that leaned heavily on the band’s newest material. “Lust,” “How the Story Ends” and “Everything Turns Around” followed before the band moved through “Joy,” “Wing” and “This Sphere.” The setlist was clearly designed to showcase where Dogstar is now, with 12 of the 20 songs coming from their newest release.
At some point during the show Bret joked that it was a “good day to have a beer on stage” and the venue happily obliged.
One of the night’s most memorable moments came before “The Whisper.” Domrose introduced the song by saying it was about San Francisco and that Detroit reminded him of San Francisco. The similarities included being by the water, having great food, and even better people. The sentiment landed with the Detroit crowd, who responded enthusiastically before the band launched into the song.
The set continued with “Shards of Rain,” “Exalted,” “Runway,” “What Is” and “Marmalade,” eventually building toward “All In Now,” the title track that closed the main portion of the show. The set drew from across Dogstar’s recent catalog while also making room for a cover of The Replacements’ “Can’t Hardly Wait.”
The main set lasted about an hour, but that wasn’t the end of the night. The crowd brought the band back for a three-song encore: “Punch the Sky,” “Shallow Easy” and “Breach”.
When Bret, Keanu and Robert came back on stage, Drummer Robert Mailhouse told the crowd that if it weren’t for Detroit, he never would have met his wife, because he was wearing a Detroit Red Wings shirt when they met.
Before the final song, the band asked the crowd, “Got another one in you”?
Detroit’s answer was an enthusiastic YES.
Dogstar’s Detroit return felt less like a routine tour stop and more like a reunion. The band sounded comfortable, energized and genuinely happy to be back on the road. And the audience, beer in hand and voices raised, made it clear they were more than ready to welcome them back to the Motor City.
