Cannibal Corpse with Mayhem, Gorguts, and Blood Incantation

Old Forester’s Paristown Hall

Louisville, KY

October 21st, 2023

Cannibal Corpse and Mayhem brought their 2023 North American Co-Headlining Tour to Louisville recently to a sold out crowd of metal fans! There was a long line of fans, both older and younger, stretched out from the venue for what seemed like miles, awaiting the moment when doors opened and they could get inside to get merch and/or secure a good spot for the show. Opening the show this evening was Denver death metal band Blood Incantation. Although these guys tend to lean towards a more ambient sound at times, their technical musical skills are amazing. The band has released several albums, EPs, and Demos since forming in 2011 and have amassed an ever-growing fan base. Their set was short, but packed a punch, with the band performing 3 songs: “Inner Paths (to Outer Space)” and “Awakening From the Dream of Existence to the Multidimensional Nature of Our Reality (Mirror of the Soul)” from their 2019 album Hidden History of the Human Race, as well as the new single “Obliquity of the Ecliptic”. They wowed their fans and no doubt made some news fans this evening! Next up was technical and experimental Canadian death metal band Gorguts. Having formed in 1989, they have had a long and successful career, which have included some periods of inactivity/hiatuses. Many fans were in for a treat on this tour, as it was the band’s first tour since 2017! Full of energy and engagement with the crowd, the band performed a great 7-song set that included “Rottenatomy”, “Disincarnated”, “Orphans of Sickness”, and “Obscura”!

Next up was Norwegian black metal band Mayhem, one of the founders of the Norwegian black metal scene, with several fans in the crowd adorned in black and white face makeup in tribute to the band. With moody lighting and smoke, singer Attila Csihar spent most of the set with a black cloak, white and black face make up, and a mic holder comprised of 2 bones. Guitarist Telcoh also wore a black cloak and black and white face make up for the duration of the set! The set list included tracks hat included “Worthless Abominations Destroyed”, “Malum”, “Voces Ab Alta”, “De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas”, “Life Eternal”, and “Deathcrush”, amongst several others. Towards the end of the set, Csihar replaced the black cloak and face make up with a horned demon-looking mask and his normal clothes, without losing the dark and moody tone of the set. With plenty of crowd surfers and large mosh pit in the center of the crowd, everyone was having a good time!

Ending the night was Cannibal Corpse! The band released their latest album Chaos Horrific on September 22nd and performed several tracks from the album this evening. Starting things off with “Scourge of Iron”, “Blood Bind”, and “Disfigured”, vocalist George “Corpsegrinder” Fisher was growling low into the mic while headbanging and twirling his hair around. Plenty of fans in the crowd were headbanging right along with him, fists in the air while they screamed out the lyrics to each song. Bassist Alex Webster and guitarists Rob Barrett and Eric Rutan also were heavily engaged with the crowd, often standing at the front of the stage to play directly to the fans. Having been around for 30+ years, they have a large and loyal fan base who love the band as much as the band loves their fans! Although “Corpsegrinder” chatted a bit during the set, it was mostly he and the band performing the songs at a furious pace while the crowd sang along and crowd surfed over the barricade. Ending the set with their hit “Hammer Smashed Face”, they gave the metal fans this evening a great show!
