The Barenaked Ladies started their set off, mentioning that it was “a little chilly to play Pine Knob” but everyone in the audience appreciated seeing them in a very small and intimate setting at the SoundBoard in Detroit on Tuesday evening.
This was the first US stop on their “Hometown Holidays” tour and I knew to expect a fun but also festive set that would include some of their major hits, as well as some Holiday songs.
Many people in the audience dressed the part with Christmas lights hanging around their necks and it didn’t go unnoticed by the band who loved the enthusiasm.
Frontman Ed Robertson shared that when he drove to the airport the day prior to come to Detroit, he realized once he got to the airport that he forgot his luggage and carry-on on his front porch at home. He said that there was no way that he was going to miss his flight. Not just because of this Holiday show but also because he was catching Geddy Lee’s book tour the previous night in Detroit as well.
Later, he jokingly welcomed Geddy Lee to the stage to join in a song. Unfortunately, he was not backstage waiting.
Their setlist was a great mix of popular hits, Holiday songs, and a few new songs off their latest album “In-Flight” which according to the band, makes a great Christmas gift and coincidently was available at the merch booth. The show ended the night with “Old Apartment” and while the crowd was walking to their cars I overheard many people say what a fantastic time they had. If you have a chance to see the Barenaked Ladies perform live, I would highly recommend you do so.
