See You Next Tuesday x CHOP CHOP CHOP CHOP CHOP CHOP CHOP – Brothers

From the first note of opening track ‘Blossom of Light’, you know exactly what you’re getting yourself into with the collaboration between Myspace era mathgrind kings See You Next Tuesday and one-man digital powerviolence artist CHOP CHOP CHOP CHOP CHOP CHOP CHOP (Chopx7, chop7times). Their blistering 10 track, 9 minute EP Brothers tells the story of two brothers from Magic: The Gathering lore. Drawing inspiration from the book “The Brothers War” by Jeff Grubb, we get songs told from the perspective of Urza, who’s story is told by See You Next Tuesday’s vocalist Chris Fox in the first 5 tracks, and Mishra, who’s side is told by Chopx7 on the last 5 tracks.

Fans of both artists will hear their signature sounds, but the two parts make a whole new beast. Drums maxed to 11 with Chopx7’s signature digital noise sounds create a rhythmic soundscape that is chaotic noise (in all of the best ways). See You Next Tuesday’s Drew Slavic trades the guitars for basses in all but two acoustic interlude tracks on this release, creating an even thicker, muddier down-tuned sound than both artists are used to. The manic screams of Fox and the panicked shrieks of Chopx7 sit atop this insane amalgamation of grindcore, noise, and most importantly, Magic: The Gathering.
