Andrew McMahon In The Wilderness brought the “New Friends” tour to the Fillmore in Detroit on Sunday night and the place was filled to the brim.

Andrew mentioned that nowadays his audience is not high schoolers anymore, but moms who took the time out of their busy schedules to find a babysitter and come see his show. He had trouble finding the right words to show how appreciative he was of everyone who showed up. “Tonight is the night to go crazy. Call in sick tomorrow” were his words and the crowd was roaring.

McMahon played a well-balanced set of music from most of his albums and musical projects. I loved seeing “Hurricane” from his time with Something Corporate live.

Just before the encore Andrew brought out a blow-up llama and asked the audience to carry him all the way back to the soundboard so he could get a shot from his FOH guys. The audience obliged and he took a wild ride through the Fillmore.

The 20+ song show ended at 10:30, which was a reasonable time for all the moms in the audience to get home to their babies.
