Lorde has just announced the pending release of “What Was That,” her first solo track since the release of 2021 album Solar Power. The new track will be “out soon” according to the Instagram post made by the New Zealand based artist who began teasing a new music last week in a post on TikTok. On Saturday, Lorde made a guest appearance with Charli XCX at Coachella where she surprised fans to perform their collaborative version of “Girl, So Confusing” off the British pop-star’s 2024 album, BRAT. Despite appearing on a Talking Heads tribute album with a cover of “Take Me to the River,” her collaboration with Charli XCX has been her most notable feature during her time off following the release of Solar Power.
In her announcement post, Lorde shared the single artwork – A close up portrait by Talia Chetrit showing the singer/songwriter with sweat dripping down her face while a braid wearing Lorde makes direct eye contact with the viewer.
“Soon” can’t come soon enough as fans now await her ambiguously timed release.
